Get to know UpGuard's amazing team! For our first employee spotlight, we spoke to Christian Kiely, who is currently a Senior Software Engineer on the CyberRisk team.
What do you do at UpGuard?
I'm a Senior Software Engineer in the Sydney product development team. Along with my colleagues, I help to develop, test and maintain the UpGuard CyberRisk platform.
What is your career background? How did you end up at UpGuard?
My passion after leaving high school was in film editing, so I partially completed a media degree at university, but found the industry difficult to break into. After a few years working in digital media, I decided to teach myself programming in my spare time, and instantly loved it. I honed my skills working on various projects as a freelancer, until I decided to apply for a role at UpGuard on a friend's recommendation. UpGuard took a bit of a chance on me as a developer with limited experience, and have since allowed me to learn and grow a great deal. I'll always be very appreciative of that.
Where did you grow up?
Various places in Sydney's north-west, with my favourite being Galston.
Before working at UpGuard, what's the strangest or most interesting job you've had?
My first job was picking lettuce on a farm in Kellyville, and it's strange to think that all that land has been replaced by apartments in the decade since.
What's your favourite UpGuard memory?
My first day on the job involved boarding a plane to Mountain View, California for that year's company kick-off. That was pretty exciting! Since then, every day working at UpGuard has been a pleasure, as we gel very well together as a team. So it's hard to pick out a specific memory!
What do you wish people understood better about UpGuard or your job?
All members of our engineering team share the load of designing, developing, testing, and maintaining the product. We relish this responsibility as it keeps us focused on producing the best work we can, whilst giving us a real tangible impact on the product.
